Overview

Machinist Companion is designed to collect as little personal information as practical. The public application does not currently require an account, payment information or a user profile, and it does not use advertising trackers or third-party analytics.

First-Party Traffic Analytics

Machinist Companion records limited first-party traffic information so the operator can understand which pages and tools are being used. Recorded analytics include the requested page, timestamp, referring website domain (when supplied by the browser), broad device type, whether the connection used IPv4 or IPv6, and a daily visitor code. The daily visitor code is a one-way keyed hash of the network part of your IP address (for IPv6, only the network prefix) and your browser's user-agent string. The key is randomly generated for each day, is held only in the server's memory (it is never written to a database or disk) and is permanently discarded when that day ends, so visits on different days cannot be linked to each other or to anyone, including by the operator. Raw IP addresses and user-agent strings are not stored in the Machinist Companion analytics database, and no cookie is used to recognise visitors. Each page view also records your approximate location as a country, and for Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia a province or state, looked up from your IP address at the time of the visit using DB-IP’s IP-to-location database; only the place name is kept, never the address or the city. It also records the first language your browser asks for (for example, English or French). To leave automated traffic out of these figures, each page sends back only its own address once it has loaded in a browser; requests from crawlers, scanners and scripts are not recorded as visits and are kept only as daily totals.

To tell new visitors from returning ones without identifying anyone, your browser keeps the date of your last visit to this site in its own storage (localStorage, under the name “mc-last-visit”, for example “2026-10-23”). That date is the same for everyone who visited on that day, so it cannot single you out. It never leaves your browser: the page sends only one word describing how long ago your last visit was (new, earlier today, the day before, within a week, within a month, or longer). A date older than about 13 months is treated as a new visit. You can delete it at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser.

Analytics records are kept for up to 24 months and are used only to understand site usage, improve the application, diagnose problems and evaluate traffic trends. Machinist Companion does not sell this analytics information or use it for targeted advertising.

Where Information Is Stored

Machinist Companion's server runs on Render and the analytics records are stored in a database run by Supabase. Both are located in Oregon, in the United States. Information processed or stored in the United States is subject to the laws of the United States and may be accessible to courts, law enforcement and national security authorities there under those laws. Render and Supabase process this information on Machinist Companion's behalf under data processing agreements.

Hosting & Security Logs

The hosting provider and normal internet infrastructure may process ordinary request information such as IP address, user agent, timestamps, requested paths and security or rate-limit information as necessary to deliver and protect the service. Their processing and retention practices are governed by their own policies.

Cookies

Public calculator use does not require analytics or advertising cookies, and visitors are not given any cookie. A strictly necessary, secure authentication cookie is used only when the site administrator signs in to the private analytics area. The administrator may also choose to set a cookie on their own browser that excludes their own visits from the traffic counts; it contains no identifier and is never set for visitors. Neither cookie is used to track public visitors or for advertising.

Browser Storage

Calculator preferences and state may be stored locally in your browser using localStorage, along with the date of your last visit described above. This information remains on your device unless your browser or device synchronizes it. You can clear it using your browser's site-data controls; doing so may reset saved calculator settings.

Calculator Requests

Values needed to perform server-side calculations may be transmitted to Machinist Companion for processing. The application is designed not to require personally identifying information for ordinary calculations. Do not enter confidential, export-controlled, personal or safety-sensitive information into calculator fields.

Future Features

If accounts, payments, cloud synchronization, advertising or materially different analytics are introduced, this notice should be updated before those features begin collecting additional personal information, and consent mechanisms will be added where required.

Your Choices

You may use browser controls to clear locally stored application state and may use privacy features that limit referrer information. Because the daily visitor code is made with a key that is deleted at the end of each day, Machinist Companion cannot link analytics records across days or associate them with a named individual.
